McDonald’s French fries can be extremely delicious and everyone likes them, but unfortunately they contain some hazardous substances which can be extremely harmful for our health. In fact they contain 10 harmful ingredients which can be a great threat for your health and well-being.

This provoked Gant Imahara from the science show Mythbusters to investigate the way how McDonald’s fries are being produced. In fact, he examined a McDonald’s fry factory and reverse-engineered the complete process.

This is what he stated: “I am perfectly aware of what you are thinking about. These look like potatoes, but are they really potatoes?”

Unfortunately, they are not even close to potatoes. They are consisted of ingredients which do not even resemble to the content of a real potato. Read the shortened ingredient list below and even no matter how appalling it can be it is the true content of the most popular McDonald’s French fries:

  • Dimethylpolysiloxane
  • Dextrose
  • Hydrogenated soybean oil
  • Hydrolyzed milk
  • Hydrolyzed wheat
  • Soybean oil
  • Canola oil
  • Natural beef flavor
  • TBHQ, or Tertiary butyl hydroquinone

The most hazardous substances that these fries contain are dimethylpolysiloxane, TBHQ, and hydrogenated soybean oil.

Dimethylpolysiloxane

The name itself is actually telling you that it is some dangerous substance, specifically it contains formaldehyde, which is highly toxic, and the National Toxicology Program has listed this ingredient as carcinogenic.

TBHQ

TBHQ is a substance present in bio-diesel, and this type of phenol is also present in the fries so that they do not get spoiled. According to Healthline the laboratory studies performed on animals demonstrated that this chemical substance can cause convulsions, liver enlargement, paralysis, and it also triggers neurotoxic effects. Plus, it is on the black list of the Feingold diet, a diet specially developed for the ADHD patients.

Hydrogenated Soybean Oil

Dr. Mercola is an established health expert which maintains that it’s “the worst type of fat, much worse compared to saturated fat.” This type of oil is also known as Trans fat, and therefore it incorporates certain health risks. Dr. Mercola states the following ones:

  • Heart disease
  • Bone degeneration
  • Obesity
  • Weak immunity
  • Cancer
  • Reproductive concerns

Additionally, Dr. Mercola states that soybean oil is far from healthy oil, as it contains omega-6 fats, and the process of hydrogenation contributes to its undesirable results.

Nonetheless, the manufacturing company in the statement to Global News maintained the following:
“After having listened to our customers carefully and after identifying some of the difficulties we were facing, McDonald’s managed to develop a transparent communication line via the interactive, online Q&A platform.”

This is in fact a positive thing as they are becoming more transparent about the use of ingredients in their products, which eventually will lead to the introduction of the necessary changes, and to the production of healthier products.
