In case of headache, muscle or joint pain, fever, we all opt for one of the most popular analgesics: ibuprofen (Advil). Available over the counter and treating a wide range of ailments, from migraines to inflammation, it has become an indispensable drug in our everyday life. But this drug, part of NSAIDs list (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), is not safe for the health.
Ibuprofen and other types of NSAIDs drugs are considered fast and effective solution against various inflammatory pains. But excessive intake of these drugs can be life threatening.
What are the effects of ibuprofen?
Ibuprofen blocks the secretion of prostaglandins, which are mediator lipids of inflammation and pain, and provides immediate relief.
The dangers of ibuprofen and NSAIDs
One of the first side effects of ibuprofen on the body relates to the liver. The liver processes this drug and an overdose or prolonged use of ibuprofen can damage it and hinder its functioning. In addition, the inflammation caused by this treatment can last long after it leaves your body.
On the other hand, several scientific studies have shown a link between excessive intake of ibuprofen and increased risk of hypertension, anemia, miscarriage, kidney damage and cardiac arrest.
Moreover, Dr. Jacques Blacher, a cardiologist and epidemiologist at the Hôtel-Dieu de Paris, says that all NSAIDs increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, but at different rates. In addition, the results of the meta-analysis that were published in the British Medical Journal, showed that ibuprofen was a drug associated with the highest risk of stroke, and that patients treated with this compound had 77% more likely chances to die than those taking placebo.
A natural alternative to ibuprofen
To benefit from the same anti-inflammatory and painkiller properties of ibuprofen, but naturally and without the harmful side effects on the health, simply replace it with turmeric. This spice known for its distinct taste and its therapeutic and cosmetic virtues has a powerful anti-inflammatory power and a great analgesic power, used for centuries in the treatment of joint pain and inflammation.
According to a recent study published by the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, a daily dose of 2 g of turmeric for 6 weeks would have the same effect as 800 mg of ibuprofen in the treatment of osteoarthritis.
How to use turmeric instead of ibuprofen?
– 1/3 cup ground turmeric
– 1 pinch of black pepper
– 3 tablespoons organic honey
– 1 tablespoon melted coconut oil
In a bowl, mix thoroughly all ingredients into dough. Take a small amount, then roll it into a ball, and continue to do so with all of the mixture. Put the turmeric balls in the refrigerator for an hour, then place them in a glass jar and keep it in the fridge. Take 2-3 balls per day.
To prepare this drink, mix 1 tablespoon of turmeric powder with 1 cup of honey and the juice of a lemon. Add a teaspoon of this mixture in a cup of warm water or tea, and consume 3 times daily.
Tip: To promote the absorption of turmeric, it is strongly recommended to combine it with a pinch of black pepper, ginger, or a healthy fat such as coconut oil.
