Breast Cancer Breakthrough
Nigel Bundred,Professor of Surgical Oncology and Consultant Surgeon based at the University Hospital of South Manchester at the European Breast Cancer Conference in Amsterdam exposed that they had evaluated the effectiveness of a pair of drugs known as Herceptin and Lapatinib.Trastuzumab, sold under the brand name Herceptin among others, is a monoclonal antibody that interferes with the HER2(human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 receptor). Its main use is to treat certain breast cancers.
When they are combined togetherthey discovered was they were able to remove some of the types of breast cancer in just 11 days.
Chemotherapy (chemo) usually refers to the use of medicines or drugs to treat cancer. The thought of having chemotherapy frightens many people. But knowing what chemotherapy is, how it works, and what to expect can often help calm your fears. It can also give you a better sense of control over your cancer treatment.
What they discovered on group of 257 females with HER2 positive breast cancerwas that of those on the drug, 11% had no cancer cells staying within 2 weeks and 17% of cases featured considerably shrunken tumors.
Plainly, the two drugs combined have a significant effect on breast cancer cells as opposed to being used by themselves.
The problem is that Herceptin’s licensing makes it only available for usage alongside chemotherapy and not alone. Chemotherapy works by stopping or slowing the growth of cancer cells, which grow and divide quickly. But it can also harm healthy cells that divide quickly, such as those that line your mouth and intestines or cause your hair to grow.
Hopefully this new discovery will change things in the near future and give hope to the cancer patients.
