Life can be really challenging and our path through can be hard and overwhelming. Negative thoughts are integral part of our existence but if they are with us all the time it can cause many troubles and health issues.
Therefore, we should do our best to keep our positive thoughts as that will help us to get through every hardship in life. As human beings we are prone to negativity occurring unexpectedly and spontaneous making real havoc in our lives.
The complexity of our psyche is presented by Patricia Harteneck, Ph.D., stating the following:
“Our minds have clever and persistent ways of convincing us of something that isn’t really true. These inaccurate thoughts reinforce negative thinking. If you can recognize them, you can learn to challenge them. Here are four common thought distortions:
Personalizing. Assuming you are to blame for anything that goes wrong, like thinking someone did not smile at you because you did something to upset her. (It’s more likely that person is having a hard day and her mood had nothing to do with you.)
Filter thinking. Choosing to see only the negative side of a situation.
Catastrophizing. Assuming the worst possible outcome is going to happen.”
There is also the black and white thinking, meaning seeing things solely in their extremes without any in between, and life is not like that.
People find it very hard to neutralize the negative thoughts and in order to achieve that you can implement certain helpful ways.
3 Effective Ways to Manage Negativity
1. Acknowledging the fact that negative thoughts are normal
Although you are told to avoid them, the first step to their neutralization is accepting the fact that they are normal. Every person in the world fights with his or hers dark side and that counts for every kind and benevolent person you know. This fight is every day for each person on deeper level, so if you have negative thoughts during the day do not get disturbed but acknowledge them as normal and try to eliminate them.
2. Thoughts will be just thoughts
As we said negative thoughts are normal and they will not matter if they are not stimulated by actions. It is true that they can be powerful, but if we do not give them significance, and we do not do anything about their follow up they will be quickly dismissed. In this way we are protecting ourselves from all the negative side effects.
3. There is always a solution
The solution is not instant or magical; you need to work on it, and although one may say replace the negativity with positivity, it is not that easy. In order to do that you need to search deeper in your thoughts and find the root causes for this negativity. By finding the root causes you can successfully deal with the pessimistic thoughts in life, and fight the hopelessness, despair, and darkness. Some people need to go even deeper, in their childhood, determining the real cause of the ongoing negativity. In some people it can be fear, insecurity, disappointment, loneliness, and so on.
Experts recommend doing this as soon as possible because that would be the best way to relieve the agitation in your mind and soul. Once determining the real cause you will address your issue accordingly and regain the control in your life. This fight will for sure make you a stronger person afterwards in your life.
Anyone who is determined can change the negative thinking patterns and replace them with positive thoughts that would bring happiness and comfort in his life.
