What is gout?
Gout, or “the disease of the kings” or “rich man’s disease” is a particular form of arthritis that is characterized by intense pain and swelling in some joints, but in most cases, this disease targets the joint located at the toe.
This disease is associated with high levels of uric acid, a type of waste naturally eliminated by the body, which comes from the digestion of certain foods and the degradation of dead cells. In fact, the uric acid is stored progressively in different parts of the body, especially in joints, as crystals causing inflammatory reactions. One of the basic rules regarding the food for people suffering from gout is to avoid foods high in purines, such as chicken, turkey, beef, veal, sausages, salted bacon, anchovies, salmon , trout, crab, lobster, tuna and lentils. Instead of butter, fat and margarine, use cold pressed vegetable oils.
