E-Cigarettes – A Dangerous Threat That Causes Horrible Incurable Disease Called ‘Popcorn Lung’!

In the fight against cigarette smoking, a new trend has been invented and that is E-cigarettes as a safer alternative to tobacco cigarettes. However, it just sounded too good to be true as new findings occurred regarding the use of E-cigarettes.

According to a conducted study on Harvard School of Public Health, E-cigarettes may not be harmful as the tobacco cigarettes, but they are harmful in some other way, so it turns out there isn’t any safe cigarette.

Namely, E-cigarettes contain a flavoring chemical known as diacetyl which is related to some cases of serious respiratory disease, particularly to the incurable condition named as “Popcorn Lung.” The reason why this condition got this name is because it was initially found in workers in microwave popcorn processing facilities who inhaled the artificial butter flavoring. It is an entirely debilitating health condition which cannot be reversed. This severe breathing disease causes scarring in tiny air sacs in the lungs, which leads to shortness of breath and too much coughing.

This is what one of the experts at the Harvard University says:

“The amount of diacetyl in 39 of the e cigarettes surpassed the amount that was able to be detected by the laboratory. Diacetyl and other related flavoring chemicals are used in numerous other flavors beyond butter-flavored popcorn, including fruit flavors, alcohol flavors, and sweet flavored e-cigarettes.”

This should very much concern us as these cigarettes are very attractive to the younger population since they are being sold with tastes as cupcake, cotton candy, and other appealing flavors.

It is most likely that there will be more threats appearing with the use of these cigarettes. The co-author of this study David Christiani, Elkan Blout Professor of Environmental Genetics, stated the following:

“Since most of the health issues about e-cigarettes have focused on nicotine, there is still much we do not know about e-cigarettes. In addition to containing varying levels of the addictive substance nicotine, they also contain other cancer-causing chemicals, such as formaldehyde, and as our study shows, flavoring chemicals that can cause lung damage.”

Conclusively, we need to state that there is no safe alternative to smoking and even these newly advertised e-cigarettes have shown to be also dangerous for the respiratory health; therefore we need to be aware of the fact that the only safe alternative is no smoking alternative.
