The animal world, no matter if it is domestic and wild can be really amazing. Dogs are our favorite pets and we keep them because of their unconditional love towards us, courage and their great will to protect us no matter what.
In addition to this, they show empathy towards other animals as well and they can really surprise us with their actions. Something like that happened to one Australian family that took care of golden retriever naming it as Asha.
Kerry McKinnon and her family live in Strathdownie, Western Virginia, Australia, where during the winter, the morning temperatures could reach around 41F degrees. These temperatures can be freezing for a baby koala, but fortunately their mothers keep the warm during the night.
Yet, one morning Kerry’s golden retriever, Asha, brought a guest to their home. Her husband called her to see what their Asha has brought and to their greatest surprise, Asha was sitting with a baby koala atop her back.
Here how Kerry explains the incident:
“It was quite early in the morning, and my husband yelled out to me to come to have a look at something”
“I didn’t know what he was talking about at first but then I saw this tiny koala snuggled on top of Asha”
“I think the baby koala fell out of his mum’s pouch and didn’t know what to do”
“He would have died out there if left alone all night. The poor thing could have been taken by a fox or something, too”
In the beginning, Kerry was shocked at first, but eventually she realized that what Asha did was very brave and protective.
“I just burst out laughing. Poor Asha didn’t know what to think; she just kept looking at me with such a confused look. She looked a bit guilty when I came out to see what was going on. Her expression was hilarious.”
“She kept looking back at the koala but she wasn’t trying to get him off her or anything. She was happy to let him snuggle into her.”
Kerry is aware of the protective instinct that dogs have and because of that they are attached to their owners, and this instinct saved the little koala.
“Asha definitely saved the koala’s life by keeping him warm. He would have died out there if left alone all night. The poor thing could have been taken by a fox or something too.”
She also explained that it “wasn’t easy” to separate the two friends, and the koala put up a “huge fuss” when Kerry attempted to take it out of her dog’s back.
They took the baby koala to a vet to get a proper examination, and she was in good health. The local animal care center of wild animals took the baby koala to wat
ch over it, and when it reaches an age it will be returned to the wild again.
This amazing event shows us how animals can become friends even if they do not belong to the same species, and this by far is the cutest friendship ever!
