Remember that flowery VW hippy van that most people still love, including the young and old generation. Well, there is a way how we can refresh our memories and for the younger generation to enjoy that old hippy feeling.
The original version was called the “splitty” due to its split front windshield, and after so many years it is still the most iconic design.
Engineers have built a new version of the classic hippy van that was a common vehicle in the sixties and seventies of the last century. In those days, this van was running on gas, but nowadays with all the effort to save the planet form the enormous CO2 emissions the engineers in VW made it electric.
We can enjoy the drive of the hippy van very soon, but in eco-version.
In January 2017, at the Detroit Auto Show, Volkswagen displayed the concept of an electric hippy van. In that same year, they gave the final confirmation for the manufacture of this vehicle that will be available on the market in 2022.They named it as I.D. Buzz, and it will be available for purchase in the United States, Europe, and China.
Here is the release on the official VW’s website:
“Following in iconic footsteps, the unique look of the ID. BUZZ Concept brings back fond memories of Volkswagen past while promising a revolution in everyone’s future.”
The appearance of the van will be very similar to the original microbus, but with a drastic upgrade. In the physical appearance the two-tone V design on the front will remain, and as well as the typical rectangular windows. But, in terms of power, the difference will be huge. Namely, the original van was with 30 horsepower, and the new I.D. Buzz will have amazing 369. The van will be with an electric motor on every axle, and the 111 kWh battery pack will allow runningof about 300 miles. Plus, the VW fast-charge system will recharge the battery to 80% capacity in 30 minutes.
Dr. Herbert Diess, the Volkswagen’s chairman of the board of management, stated:
“For me, the I.D. Buzz concept is the most beautiful and most exciting electric car in the world. Our goal is clear: we want to make the fully electric, fully connected car a bestseller around the world. The iconic car of the electric age must be a Volkswagen.
These cars will offer everything – and even more – than you have seen from other electric carmakers. And they will be much more affordable.”
The new electric van follows 2015’s “diesel gate”, and the installed software has decreased the harmful emissions which was shown on the tested VW vehicles. Plus, VW has four electric concepts together with the I.D. Buzz, the I.D. Vizzion, SUV named as I.D. Crozz, and hatchback named as I.D.3.
The I.D. Buzz will be with a front trunk, and with other exciting features like a Modular Electric Drive kit. There will be the typical three rows of seats that can be rearranged into various ways to maximize the use of space.
According to VW, the future models of the I.D. Buzz would include a steering wheel that folds up, an automated pilot mode, and popup laser scanners in the roof.
Dr. Herbert Diess states that the company’s goal is to reignite America’s love for VW, and in order to achieve that his company is fully committed in engineering the perfect van.
The new I.D. Buzz will be released in 2020, and it will become the seventh generation of this van. The vehicle evolved in style over time, but it has preserved its versatility, character, and ability to draw or carry a crowd.
