Man Made His Wife Choose Between Her Rescue Dogs and Him – She Picked the Dogs

The best friend of the human being is the dog and that has been proven through history. Some people are so into their dogs that their love towards them overpasses that of a human being. Such person is Liz Haslam who chose her dogs over her husband.

Liz and Mike Haslam were high school sweethearts who after graduation, in 1991 got married and lived in a two-bedroom house in the countryside in Barnham, Suffolk, United Kingdom. They had one child Ollie and had been married for 25 years.

During the course of their marriage Liz started to rescue dogs, which was expected, as she was a passionate dog lover. The love towards these furry animals is encrypted in her genes, namely, her father owned an animal feed company, and her mother raised West Highland Terriers.

This love towards dogs triggered her to start her own business, Beds for Bullies, where she sheltered terriers in need.

Mike Haslam was not over thrilled with her passion, and at some point he could not bear the constant care of the dogs that needed permanent homes which was difficult to find. So, he made Liz to choose, “it’s either me or the dogs”, and since there was no way for Liz to quit on rescuing the dogs this was the end of their marriage.

Liz commented:

“ Since that moment, I have neither seen nor heard from him. I thought that, after 25 years, he should’ve known that giving up dogs was not a part of my intentions, not at all. He knew from the moment we got married what I was all about. I don’t know what he expected.”

However, just like any separation or divorce, partners have previously drifted apart that lead to such decision. Mike was working really hard having none or very little time for Liz. She missed his love and attention and thus she fully dedicated to the dogs.

Currently, she takes care of 30 dogs, devoting all her time to them that she sometimes works up to 18 hours a day. She is focused on offering them the needed care, medication, and love.

Liz says:

“It is a very deliberating job, you can’t have a day off. I don’t sit down till 11:30 at night so you can’t just go on holiday. And I can’t just turn around and say I am not going to do it anymore, it is my responsibility, I took the dogs in I can’t just stop.”

She is truly devoted to her dogs and does not care about the money she spends for them. She even lived in a tent for a certain period of time as she did not have enough money to pay the rent, bur her dogs were well taken care of.

Nevertheless, she believes that she is doing the right thing, and has no intention of quitting. In terms of her marriage, she believes she has done the right choice, as her “passion for dogs was too huge for Mike.”

Her shelter, Beds for Bullies, runs mostly on donations, and she accepts even the puppies that have been previously rejected by other shelters. She additionally funds her shelter from her small business that is also connected to pets, accommodations for pets when their owners are on vacation. For Liz this is her passion and that makes her very happy.

We believe that the rescued dogs are very happy to have such guardian like Liz who over the years has admitted over 200 rescued dogs.
