Age is inevitable in the life of a human being and no matter how much we fight it we cannot escape it, just sometimes we do not want to fully acknowledge it. But, that can change really quickly when some of the youngsters comment about something that you cannot relate to it.
The Millennials, or otherwise known as the people from Generation Y, are born between 1981 and 1996, and their discussions about the current situation in the world are never-ending. The older generation claims that the Millennials are ruining the economy and the world in general, which makes them responsible for any minor inconvenience. While the dispute between the generations is going, there is a new generation appearing on the horizon outruling the Millennials, the “Generation Z” or “Gen Z”. People belonging to this generation are born from the mid-1990s to mid-2000s, and nowadays they are making everyone feel old, even the Millennials who although are still young as the oldest members are 38 years old. Nonetheless, the feeling of being ancient catches the Millennials as well.
This new generation, Gen Z, are digitally literate since their birth, being exposed to internet, social networks, and mobile systems. For them it is natural to collect and cross-reference the abundance of various information sources meanwhile integrating virtual and offline experiences. They are in constant search for the truth, either personal or communal, which contributes to greater freedom of expression and greater openness to understanding different kinds of people. Moreover, in terms of business the “Gen Z” generation is more entrepreneurial than Millennials. According to Gen Z marketing strategist, Deep Patel, “the newly developing high tech and highly networked world has resulted in an entire generation thinking and acting more entrepreneurially.”
Many Millennials have recently admitted feeling old on social media, as the members of the Generation Z cannot relate to a lot of items their predecessors knew and used.
The Generation X and the baby boomers (born from the 40s to the late 70s) consider the Millennials as undisciplined and delinquent, and now they are replaced by the new generation who will now also be the targets of various opinions. This generation has been born in an era of numerous advanced technological gadgets, machines, and devices contrary to the Millennials. The Millennials did not know this advanced technology when they were born and they still remember the Polaroid cameras and radio cassette players. Plus, they used 3MB floppy disks, and antenna-wired monstrosities as cell phones, RGB cables, Word Perfect, Game Boy, and the ridiculous circle-eared alarm clocks, something that GenZ’s find old-fashioned.
The Generation Z uses all the advanced gadgets since the day were born like smartphones, digital cameras and alarms, Word 2016, Plasma TVs, Xboxes, and external hard drives running into terabytes of storage capacity. The difference is huge, and although the Millennials are all familiar with these new gadgets they did not have them while growing up.
They have even become nostalgic about their childhood and started sharing pictures of some of the objects and items from their time on net and Twitter. The GenZ did not have the faintest idea what these objects actually represent.
Time passes really fast especially in the advanced digital era, but it is ok to feel old Millennials!
