We all love the beach as it offers us great relaxation and rest from the stressful life. However, it can offer so much more in terms of physical and mental health.
As per the findings of a released study in The Journal of Environmental Psychology, spending time on the beach can offer remarkable restorative benefits. The author of the study, J. Aaron Hipp, A Ph.D., who works as an assistant professor at the Brown School and is also an environmental expert, states the following:
“Many studies have proven that natural environments such as waterfronts and beaches can offer more benefits to humans than the gyms, built urban environment and entertainment venues.
The most restorative environment at the beach is when the tides are low and the day temperatures are mild. People who were visiting the beach, on a day that was about 3 (F) warmer, than other days, have 30% decreased chance to perceive the coastal park or beach as restorative, comparing to the ones that were visiting the beach when it was colder.”
There is no person that felt worse after a visit on the beach, the sun, the warm sand, and the blue waters offer us stress relief and instant better mood.
Spending time on the beach makes us happy releasing us from the ongoing stress. The calming effects are felt immediately after stepping out into the sun.
The Facts Site reports the following:
“ Both the sun and the waves combined work to completely relax your body, release you from your aches, and free you from daily stresses. Not only is serotonin almost immediately released when you arrive on the beach, (serotonin is a key hormone for relaxation and happiness), but the sound and visuals of the beach and ocean are simply so soothing and peaceful.
Spending time on the sun contributes to the perfect light therapy that is highly recommended by doctors in the fight against anxiety and stress. The sound of crashing waves will calm the body and mind, and because of that all advertised sleep machines are with this particular sound.
Here it is what each natural element on the beach can offer to you:
1. The Sun
Sun exposure enhances the vitamin D levels in the body and the calcium absorption. Thanks to this exposure our bones will get stronger also helping us in preventing issues such as heart attacks, stroke, congestive heart failure, and other heart issues.
Therefore, you need to spend at least 10 minutes in the sun so that the body receives the required amount of vitamin D. Staying on the sun will boost the endorphin levels and prevent the development of autoimmune diseases. Yet, the sun exposure needs to be moderate and in order to protect your body from the possible risk of skin cancer you should always apply sunscreen.
2. The Sand
In our feet particularly in the soles are the most nerve endings of our body, hence walking in the sand betters our mood and strengthens the feet muscles. The reason for that is that walking on sand barefoot needs 1.6 to 2.5 times more energy than walking on hard surfaces.
As per Dr. Thierry M. Lejeune, M.D:
“More mechanical work is performed by our muscles, when we are walking or running on sand, compared to when we are walking or running on a hard surface.”
Plus, the sand will act as a natural skin exfoliator removing all dead skin cells and stimulate the production of the new ones. The metabolism of your body will get boosted by burying yourself into the sand and in that way the brain will elevate the heart rate as in that way it offers the feeling of more weight than you really have.
3. The Seawater
The seawater is packed with magnesium, iodine, and potassium thus detoxifying the body and treating the infections. Plus, the sounds of the waves support the release of serotonin and dopamine. The blue color of seawater calms and betters the mood. The content of salt will help in the treatment of cuts and sores, and at the same time battle against acne, pimples, and blackheads. Plus, your hair will benefit a lot by exfoliating the scalp, and cleansing the hair oils.
Swimming can contribute to better figure and body shape and it is considered one of the best physical exercises. Its practice can burn 414 calories in an hour, reduce stress and treat depression and anxiety. Additionally, it will alleviate joint pain, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, and relieve the symptoms of arthritis.
There is nothing like a good night sleep after a spent day on the beach. The beach itself has three key factors that help with the sleep: reduction of stress and anxiety levels, physical activity and hormonal balance. So, if you have sleeping issues or suffer from insomnia, then spent a day on the beach and thus enjoy all its amazing benefits.
