New Study Shows That People Love Dogs More Than They Love Other Humans

Having a pet in your life offers so many benefits both for the keeper and for the pet. People very strongly connect to their pets, especially if the pet is a dog. We have all heard that the best friend of the human is the dog willing to protect him at all costs.

Pets become an integral part of the family and when it dies, which is inevitable since most pets do not have long life span, is the worst thing that can happen to the overall family.

People who keep pets will do all they can to protect their pet health wise and in other aspects of its life. In particular, dogs are very attached to their owners that will go to the extreme and die for them. In the history and nowadays there are many stories of how dogs had protected their owners.

This close relation between the human and the pet has been analyzed by experts at Northeastern University’s Brudnick Center on Violence and Conflict in Boston. It has been confirmed the great love between the owner and the pet which goes even to a higher level by developing a special bond that can be stronger even from a relationship with another human being.

In this research were involved 240 participants in the age range of 18 to 25 years old and it was based on owners’ empathy towards their pet, a baby and an adult. The results were amazing the empathy was stronger when babies and pets were concerned than towards the adult.

The co-authors of the research, Jack Levin and Arnold Arluke, were astonished of the obtained results. They told the volunteers fictional stories in which someone abused a puppy, a 6-year-old dog, and a 30-year-old adult. The ending of the story was that the victims were saved by a police officer, but they all were found unconscious with a broken leg and deep cuts.

When people heard the story they showed more sympathy towards the puppy than towards the adult. If you are still wondering how that can be, the simple and obvious reason is that both the puppy and the toddler were considered to be innocent beings.

In addition to this, Levin maintains that although the dogs are not longer puppies they are still perceived as bigger puppies, meaning that they are dependent and helpless. On the other hand, an adult is independent person being capable to protect himself.

According to researchers the shown empathy will be given to any other animal like a cat or rabbit.
