Sexual abuse in any form is a horrible crime leaving the victims destroyed for their entire life. What most of us appalls is when children are the victims of a sexual abuse, and unfortunately the numbers of such crimes have risen in the past decade.
Child sexual abuse has been defined by the international children protective institutions as “any sexual activity between a child and closely related family member (incest) or between a child and an adult or older child from outside the family.”
There is a tendency for this type of abuse not to be reported or even left undocumented. The reason for this is that children are commonly violated by someone they know and because of that have ambivalent feelings towards the offender and do not say anything. Some of them don’t even understand that they have been abused, and the ones who do, fear of the consequences, feel shame or guilt, or believe that no one would think that they are telling the truth.
The situation gets worse as some forms of violence against children are socially accepted, tacitly forgiven, or not even considered to be violence.
What figures say about child sexual abuse?
According to obtained data, 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys are sexually abused before the age of 18. The Internet takes a part in this statistics where 1 in 5 children are solicited sexually while on the net. Statistics say that 30% of sexual abuse is never reported and almost 70% of all reported sexual assaults happen to children aging 17 and under. As we mentioned before the children know the perpetrator in some way and about 90% of child sexual abuse victims have reported this. However, these figures can go really low if there is a proper education about this offense as 95% of sexual abuse can be prevented.
As per the data of The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children almost half a million people are registered sex offenders in the U.S. In terms of gender, 80 to 90% of the offenders are male, and 10 to 20% are female. According to the National Sex Offenders Registry a typical pedophile will commit 117 sexual crimes in a lifetime.
In 2018, the reports of the Australian Federal Police showed about 18,000 reports of child exploitation, and in 2019 the number got dramatically higher almost twice the cases than the previous year.
In 2019, the UNICEF annual report revealed that over 8.9 million adults and children had access to a channel to report sexual exploitation and abuse. This worldwide organization has supported 128 countries to implement a range of interventions to better children’s access to justice.
Therefore, a proper education about this issue is really important in preventing offenses of such nature. This topic should not be a taboo and needs to be discussed and some facts need to be revealed. The community needs to be educated, and as well as families, in fact everyone so that these horrible crimes get prevented.
Child sexual abuse damages the life of a child
The sexual offenders spend very little time in prison and some of them not even one day. On the other hand, the victims of the child sexual abuse are destroyed for their whole life. The Australian Attorney-General Christian Porter claims that almost a third of all perpetrators of child sexual abuse, that have been recently on trial have not been imprisoned at all. Hence, the great need for implementation new laws for pedophiles.
Effective Law for Pedophiles
A new law is being prepared and it is backed by the Australian opposition leader Anthony Albanese. The senators have also shown concerns about the minimum sentences or non-sentencing, so it is expected that all of them will support the new law that will introduce tougher sentences.
Peter Dutton, Australian Home Secretary, states that the Australian Federal Police working with AUSTRAC and other institutions have intensified their investigation in uncovering criminals.
Dutton states that these actions must be punished and the sentences should reflect community expectations. The harsh penalties would significantly deter other possible offenders.
The new imprisonment law of pedophiles will consist of a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 to 7 years. The minimum sentences for offenders will be from one to four years for all Commonwealth child sex offenses. This law will include the online abusers thus setting up new offenses that will target the operators of the websites that release child sex abuse content.
This law is set to pass federal parliament very soon thereby protecting millions of innocent children from pedophiles.
