These Biodegradable Coffee Cups Embedded with Seeds Grow into Trees when Thrown Away

Our planet has suffered a lot from the human touch starting from pollution up to massive deforestation. Therefore, we should do everything that is in our power to restore the beauty of Nature. A company named RRG, standing for Reduce/Reuse/Grow, has come up with ingenious idea, a coffee cup with seeds inside the walls.

This small team based in California, USA has come with an amazing idea that can solve some of our waste issues and at the same time help in restoring the green areas on our planet.

The CEO, Alex Henige, of RRG has developed these alternative paper cups containing seeds that are local to the region. The plants that will be planted will be appropriate for the local ecosystem.

The Restoration Packaging funded this idea which gave a kick start to the company of launching these environmentally-friendly cups. Customers have the opportunity to buy other products like hats, shirts, and framed pictures of healthy landscapes of varying sizes, to help the funding of these cups so that more seeds could be planted.

Thanks to the purchase of the other products RRG gathered about $21,000 that got their company off the ground meanwhile helping the planet by developing these cups.

This is an incredible idea because billions of beverage containers are thrown away on yearly basis making the waste issue worse than it is. As per the data of a 2018 Statista study, the citizens of the states consume about two paper cups of coffee every day which means that billions of paper cups end up in landfills and oceans. According to the Boston Globe estimation, in average, the decomposition of these cups in the landfills will take over 20 years.

In oceans, the decomposition will be complete in only few days, but the alarming fact is the content of these cups with dangerous components like chlorine dioxide and polyethylene.

There is also another commonly used component in these hot beverage containers, and that is, Styrofoam. This material breaks down into tiny pieces which are easily blown away on the breeze thereby causing widespread pollution, or ending up in the stomach of various animals. Therefore, the idea of the RRG Company is one step forward to cleaner environment.

According to the Restoration Packaging website, their products are designed with the most sustainable resources and they are 100% compostable and recyclable. Each one of their products is a contribution to the local restoration efforts and landscape beautification.

When using these cups for seed planting, you can add some eggshells that will offer the needed calcium and thus make it a successful planting.
