Potato chips that we buy in stores are very tempting and delicious, but they are really unhealthy snacks. The problem is that like any junk food moderation is very difficult to follow and in the end you end up eating more than you are supposed. This is really bad for your body, and because of that we recommend replacing the store-bought potato chips with crispy zucchini chips. The latter ones are significantly healthier and not to mention the fact that they are also tasty. In this article we shall present you a recipe of homemade zucchini chips and thus enjoy their crispiness with the tasty flavor of cool ranch.

 Potato Chips versus Zucchini Chips

It goes without saying that potato chips are unhealthy, but we enjoy their taste and there is no harm in eating them once in a while. However, if this is very frequent habit, then for sure they are not good for your body, especially if you lead a poor lifestyle lacking healthy ingredients and exercising.

The first obvious side effect of eating junk food is weight gain and this also applies for potato chips. They are pretty rich in calories and refined oils. Let us present the numbers:

  • In 1 ounce of plain potato chips ( around 15 to 20 chips) there are:
  • 10 grams of fat
  • 154 calories
  • 120–180 milligrams of sodium

Not to mention the fact that the high content of sodium is endangering your cardiovascular health. People never stop to an ounce of potato chips, but eat more and considering what they contain you can imagine how detrimental they can be for your body.

As per a conducted 2015 study released in “Health Affairs” the potatoes fried in oil are one of the foods highly related to weight gain.

High consumption of sodium leads to elevated blood pressure, that in turn will cause plenty of health concerns, including stroke, kidney disease, and coronary heart disease. In addition to this, frequent intake of chips can lead to high cholesterol levels. The reason for this is that most chips are deep-fried and that creates Trans fats, which are linked to the development of high levels of LDL – bad cholesterol and a higher risk of a heart disease. Potato chips are commonly fried in oils like sunflower, safflower, or corn oil, and each one of them is high in omega 6 fatty acids, which on the other hand are accountable for the inflammation.

Potato chips are only caloric food without valuable nutrients like vitamins and minerals which make them “empty” food. If you are eating them in large amounts, then your body receives only bad oil and plenty of salt. Snacks should be healthy filling the nutritional needs missed at meals, and chips do not offer that at all.

On the other hand, zucchini are the healthy snacks that should by all means replace the commonly consumed potato chips. This veggie is packed with nutrients such as vitamins A and C, and soluble and insoluble fiber. The latter will support a healthy digestion by lowering constipation and nourishing healthy bacteria in the gut. Moreover, zucchinis are low in calories, and for sure will not make you fat.

People who have issues with the blood sugar should not consume potatoes, and the zucchini can help in lowering the blood sugar levels. Hence, the best option in this case is the intake of zucchini that are considered to be the optimal alternative for high-carbohydrate foods such as chips and pasta.

They are baked in the oven for a long period of time and thus get the perfect crispiness that you like in the traditional potato chips. The crispiness will be there and as well as the munchiness.

In order to obtain the perfect zucchini chips you need to cut them as thin as possible, therefore it is best to use a mandolin or a slicer tool that the food processor contains. The proper thickness of the zucchini slices will offer the crispiness and as well as it will affect the baking time. The thinner they are the more quickly they will be baked. After an hour in the oven, you can check them, but it is most likely that they will need more time. Patience is a virtue, and in this case it means tastier zucchini slices.

No need to hurry, especially not when waiting for the perfect snack of the day. These slices have the perfect crunch and flavor, and once you try it you will forget the store-bought potato chips. Let us not forget that this is the healthiest snack that you will ever get.

A Recipe of the Cool Ranch Zucchini Chips

Needed Ingredients:

  • 2 zucchinis
  • 1 tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil (for baking)
  • 1 tablespoon of ranch seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon of dried oregano
  • Kosher salt
  • A pinch of black pepper, freshly ground
  • Cooking spray

The zucchini chips can be either baked or fried.

Oven Zucchini Chips

Preheat the oven to 225°, and prepare a large baking sheet greased with cooking spray.

As mentioned before it is very important to nicely slice the zucchinis making them as thin as possible. Place the zucchini slices on paper towels and pat them softly to draw out the excess moisture. Once ready transfer them into a large bowl, pour the olive oil and then add the ranch seasoning, oregano, salt, and pepper. Toss them so that they are nicely coated with the oil and the seasons, and then put them in a single layer on the baking sheet.

Put the baking sheet in oven and bake till they become crispy. Normally, it would take 1 hour and 20 minutes, but make sure to check them after about an hour as the baking time depends on the thinness of the slices. Set them aside to cool off at ambient temperature, and after that serve your super delicious zucchini slices.

 Air Fryer Zucchini Chips

Use cooking spray to grease the air fryer basket, but do it lightly. Cut the slices very thinly and then place them on paper towels to draw out the excess moisture.

After that, put them in a large bowl, and season them with ranch seasoning, oregano, salt, and pepper, but without any oil. Toss them so that they are nicely seasoned and then put a single layer in the basket. In this type of preparing a little overlapping will do no harm.

Air fry at 375° for around 6 minutes, and after that flip the slices and cook for additional 6 minutes. Once the chips become golden remove them and set another layer of zucchini chips. Continue frying them till they turn golden and crispy, and now you will need around 2 – 4 minutes. For a crispier effect, shake the basket every minute.

Choose the preparation that most suits you and enjoy this healthy and tasty snack during the day.
